Typically a yard only needs an 1" of water per week. More during drought periods. 
Avoid watering 11am – 3pm (the hottest part of the day).  Ideally you should water your lawn 6am – 10am and also don’t water at night; this can lead to fungus and mildew. 
If you are unable to water in the morning, 4pm – 7pm is generally the second best time.
